The course leading to the award of the Master of Arts (M.A) degree in law aims to ingrain in you the necessary skills to conduct scholarly legal research and write a dissertation in law, while critically evaluating and engaging with law, jurisprudence and legal scholarship. You will thus expand upon your knowledge of the branch of the law underpinning your dissertation by reading, engaging with and beginning to contribute to at least one identifiable line of literature in the context of a postgraduate dissertation in law.

the degree of Bachelor of Laws with at least Category II or
the degree of Bachelor of Laws (Honours) with at least Second Class (Honours) or
equivalent qualifications to those listed in (a) to (c) as approved by Senate on the recommendation of the Faculty Board.

Applicants may be required to sit for an interview before being accepted for the Course. The interview shall assess their suitability in regard to the particular programme of study offered in the Course for which they have applied.

LAW5002*	Dissertation	80 ECTS
* Work on the Dissertation is expected to start in Semester 1 of academic year 2025-2026 (October 2025) and continue up to the end of Summer Semester of academic year 2026-27 (September 2027).

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Master of Arts in Law under the auspices of the Faculty of Laws.

At the end of the course, you will be able to:

Draw up a refined proposal to conduct postgraduate research in law.
Conduct postgraduate research in law.
Write a postgraduate dissertation in law.
Actively engage with the branch of legal scholarship underpinning his/her dissertation.
Begin contributing to legal scholarship, particularly the branch of legal scholarship underpinning his/her dissertation.
Deliver presentations on work completed and work in progress.

Completion of the M.A. degree in law:

Provides the pediments to pursue studies and research at doctoral level, particularly doctoral studies in law. The M.A degree in law can also be useful toward completion of doctoral studies in a different field that would be complemented by providing a basis in postgraduate studies in law.
Enables lawyers and legal practitioners to further their legal work and practice by being able to engage with cutting edge research in law as well as by being able to conduct academic research in law.
Complements careers beyond the scope of law and legal practice per se that may nevertheless benefit from the ability to engage with and conduct research in law.
